Walsenburg is the county seat of Huerfano County, founded in the 1870s during the coal mining boom that shaped southern Colorado. Named after merchant Fred Walsen, the town was a major coal-producing center into the mid-1900s. Today Walsenburg serves as a gateway to the Spanish Peaks and a stopping point along I-25 between Pueblo and Trinidad. (Wikipedia)
The Spanish Peaks — known as the Wahatoya — dominate the western skyline and are designated a National Natural Landmark. Lathrop State Park just west of town offers fishing, camping, and golfing with mountain views. Downtown Walsenburg has seen revitalization with new restaurants and art galleries. The Walsenburg Mining Museum preserves the region's coal heritage.
Walsenburg housing is predominantly older construction from the coal mining era, with thick walls and original heating systems that have been upgraded over the decades. Some homes still have converted coal furnaces or outdated equipment. The mix of historic properties and newer builds on the town's edges creates varied HVAC needs.
